TZATZIKI (Cucumber Yogurt Dip)

Tzatziki is a Greek-style sauce, typically served as condiment with meat dishes and vegetables, or as part of an assorted meze small plate platter that is traditionally served.

Refreshing cucumber, creamy Greek yogurt, and zingy lemon make it the perfect condiment for just about everything.

Greece is up there in my to do visit list and couple of months we had planned to visit but due to off season and heavy snowing, it did not work out. As pre-travel menu surfing I was googling Greek cuisines and my eyes got stuck on this gorgeous looking dish. Apart from the heavenly combination of simple flavors in this recipe, I really love it because it is super easy to make! But I was little skeptical, if my kids would like. On the contrary my elder daughter, who is a healthy eater, loved it and the next day asked me for the left over as evening snack. This is definitely going to be in my party menu.

Greek Tzatziki is a refreshing yogurt based condiment flavored with grated cucumber and garlic typically served in the Mediterranean. The flavor is balanced with a little lemon juice, fresh dill, salt and mild spice.  Let’s head to making this super simple recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1⁄2 large Cucumber
  • 2 cups plain Greek yogurt
  • 3 tablespoon. Dill, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon. Mint, finely chopped
  • 1 small Shallot, finely minced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon. fresh Lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon Black Pepper, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon. Olive oil
  • Paprika, for garnish
  • Kosher Salt, as per taste

Procedure:

Grate the cucumber add to it the minced shallot and toss with some salt. Set it aside for 5 minutes to ooze out the cucumber juice. The salt helps to draw out moisture from the cucumber.

In the meantime, chop the greens – dill, mint and crush the garlic.
Now squeeze excess water from the cucumber, else the sauce will be runny. To this add crushed garlic.

Transfer the Greek yogurt in a bowl and give a gentle mix. Greek yogurt is nothing but the thick yogurt. If you feel your yogurt is not thick, let it rest in a strainer for an 1 hour to drain off any water. Now add the chopped greens and season with lemon juice, pepper and salt. Mix it all together and voila.

To serve it, add a touch of extra-virgin olive oil for flavor and shine and sprinkle with paprika.  Serve it with pita bread or fresh cut vegetables.
