Be it a get-together or a function or even wedding. There is no celebration without Gulab Jamuns in Indian household. So lets hop on to make this easy peasy delicious treat.

A few tips for making the best bread Gulab Jamun. To attain a flavorful Gulab Jamun use milk instead of water to knead the bread. Adding reduced milk solids or Khoya to the soft bread dough will yield a rich flavor that is close to the authentic Gulab Jamun flavor. The bonus on this shortcut recipes is that only an expert will be able to find the difference between the ones made with bread and flour.

Basically this is a quick and cheat version to traditional Gulab Jamun and I guess a bit healthy as we use wholewheat bread.

Ingredients:

8 slices of Wholewheat Brown Bread
3/4 cup cottage cheese or Koya (milk solids)
½ cup milk
1/4 tsp cardamom powder
6 pistachios
2 cups oil
Ingredients for Syrup
2 cup water
1 cup sugar
½ tsp cardamom powder
1 tsp rose water

Procedure for the Dough:

Trim off the edges of bread slices and break them into small pieces.

Add the bread slices into the mixer and process to make fine breadcrumbs. Transfer the freshly made breadcrumbs to a mixing bowl.

To this add the crumbled cottage cheese or milk solids, cardamom powder and warm milk. Milk should be added little by little and knead into a smooth dough. Adding milk solids to the soft bread dough will yield an authentic Gulab Jamun flavor.

Do not overwork the dough otherwise the Jamuns will become hard. Cover with a damp cloth till the sugar syrup is ready.

Procedure for Sugar Syrup:

In a deep bottom vessel take 2 cup water and 1 cup sugar and allow it to boil. Keep stirring in between. Boil it until the sugar syrup is slightly thick and forms almost 1 string consistency.

To check the consistency of the syrup, take a drop of the syrup on the tip of your thumb and softly press it with the pointer finger. When you distant the two fingers there should be a thin sugar string. Now add rose water and mix well. Cover it with lid and switch off the flame. Set it aside.

Procedure for Bread Gulab Jamun:

Grease your palm and knead the dough again. Pinch out dough to make gooseberry sized smooth balls. Ensure that the bread balls are smooth without any cracks and cover with a damp cloth till the is oil hot enough for deep frying.

In a pan pour enough ghee/oil for deep frying. Heat this over medium heat. When the ghee/oil is hot enough, add in the rolled balls. Fry the balls on medium-low heat and keep them rotating so the Gulab Jamun is cooked from all sides and obtains golden colour evenly.

Since we are using brown bread, our Jamun's will have dark colour. Remove them from oil and transfer onto a tissue paper until it cools down.

Add the golden fried balls into the hot sugar syrup and cook for a minute. Allow the Jamun's to soak in the sugar syrup for an hour.

Serve it warm or at room temperature along with some pistachios sprinkled over. I like to have it warm, how about you?

You will love this instant-mix bread Gulab Jamun that are soaked up with a cardamom and rose water infused in sugar syrup.
